The Great Wall of Base ten
As seen on the left, our Great Wall of Base Ten is a fantastic visual representation of how numbers grow when multiplied by 10. The names for each group are as follows:
- Unit: We started with a single cube which we will be referring to as a unit. It's dimensions are 1 cm x 1 cm giving it an area of 1 sq. cm.
- Strip: Its dimensions are 1 cm x 10 cm giving it an area of 10 sq cm. We can say a strip is made up of 1 ten, or 10 units.
- Mat: Its dimensions are 10 cm x 10 cm giving it an area of 100 sq cm. We can say a mat is made up of 1 hundred, 10 tens, or 100 units.
- Strip-Mat: This is a strip made up of 10 mats. Its dimensions are 10 cm x 100 cm giving it an area of 1,000 sq. cm. We can say a strip mat is made up of 1 thousand, 10 hundreds, 100 tens, or 1,000 units.
- Mat-Mat: This mat is made up of 100 mats. Students worked together to build 10 strip mats for us to put the mat-mat together. Its dimensions are 100 cm x 100 cm giving it an area of 10,000 sq. cm. We can say a mat-mat is made up of 1 ten-thousand, 10 thousands, 100 hundreds, 1,000 tens, or 10,000 units.
